Established in 2007 as Chinese International School, the newly renamed HWA attempts to integrate Eastern and Western values through a holistic fashion in a multicultural environment. It has a robust Chinese language programme.

Centrally located, HWA is accessible via public transport. MRT stations closest to Hillside Drive are Serangoon (NE12/CC13) and Kovan (NE13).

Sports facilities within the campus include basketball, volleyball, netball, bouldering and futsal courts for older students while younger students may enjoy other facilities such as the climbing structures or the creative water play area. Mini buses also provide shuttle services to the nearby Serangoon Stadium 10 minutes away from the campus.

HWA provides boarding facilities at 55 Hillside Drive and Oldham Hall. Both of these are within hundred metres of the main campus, under 24-hour adult supervision and fully equipped with laundry, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi.
